Greetings . Graveyard Of Gods... Nice name :-) I am an atheist from Turkey. I found this forum on google. I interest with history of religions. When you read about history of religions, it's not hard see all religions are made by people. I think religion greatest mistake of people and shame of civilization. As Freud's say: Religion is our communal obsessions.
Anyway... Nice forum. Free thinking is good :D

I agree with you, especially that it seems quite obvious that religions are of human invention.

I'm curious. What is it like to be an atheist in Turkey? Are you able to freely express your ideas about religion there?

It's not illegal. We have secular laws since 1923. There is many books and articles published against religion in Turkey. And there is famous atheist writers like Turan Dursun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turan_dursun Aziz Nesin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aziz_Nesin... But atheism is risky in Turkey.
There is many conservative people in Turkey. Turkey is one of most godly countries. If you gonna say anything against religion, you have many risks.
I can talk about my ideas about religion. Especially in univercity. I had some discussions in Facebook pages. I'm still alive as you seen :-) but i had many menaces.

In my experience here in Canada, it's pretty safe to come out as an atheist but I'm told that it can be risky to do so in some parts of the United States. I will look up those two Turkish atheists you mentioned.

From the article about Turan Dursun:

After coming to negative conclusions about religion, Dursun became "angry" that Mohammed took away valuable years of childhood and youth. He said: "So many people can't live their childhood properly because of him. So many people are sufferers of his disasters. So many people know what's right as wrong and what's wrong as right because they think the darkness that he chose exists. Human emotions and human creations haven't progressed in many ways, because of him.

Those are brave and sensible words. It's unfortunate that he was assassinated, but not surprising.

Nah, the US is pretty homogenized. Even out here in Tennessee, I can be a weirdo and not have to worry about it. There are dumb idiots everywhere.
