The Catechism of the Catholic Church calls it a "sacrament at the service of communion", by which it means that marriage gives a person a particular mission in bringing others to salvation. This puts in the same category as Holy Orders, but unlike Holy Orders, it does not confer a "sacramental character" or an "indelible mark" that the recipient will carry for eternity. Now that I think about it, this seems inconsistent: if your earthly mission is to have babies and indoctrinate them, you don't get the same long-term job security as if your mission is to indoctrinate everyone in your neighborhood (both tasks are clearly unnecessary in heaven). I understand the biblical precedent for each of these beliefs, so I guess I'll just have to say that Jesus made a bad decision on granting sacramental character in one case but not the other.
