The libsoc position on education

Postby Hierophant » Tue Apr 27, 2010 23:49

What is everyone's opinion about how education would be provided, what form it would take, and what its goals should be?

It's not something I've thought much about but in terms of theory I'd probably start in the general direction of Unschooling and Democractic education and work out from there. Also, Illich's Deschooling.

A positive and scientific morality, we have said, can give the individual this commandment only: Develop your life in all directions, be an "individual" as rich as possible in intensive and extensive energy; therefore be the most social and sociable being. (Jean-Marie Guyau)
If you can read this, you are the resistance.

As for how it would be provided, I have been thinking about free education, and in an LTV system it shouldn't be too hard. Simply redirect the part of the person's wage that would pay for the cost of the education, and give it directly to the school system. There would still be the problem of how to allocate the money, but it's not insurmountable.

Haven't given much thought to it either myself, but I like the idea of student-run and community-run schools or something similar.

One important point though: I do think that all children deserve education. It shouldn't be merely a choice left to the parent.

Yes, I definitely think we need to divorce the will of the parents from the needs of the child. Children's needs should be provided for whether the parents want to or not.
