Utopian movies?

Postby Hierophant » Sun Nov 28, 2010 20:03

Are there any utopian movies? Do any of you know any?

NOTE: when I say "utopian," I MEAN "utopian." I don't mean "dystopian societies where most people are happy," as most people on the Internet who made lists seem to believe that's what "utopian" means.
Star Trek movies don't count, as the utopian aspects are not at all discussed or shown in the movies (and in fact, calling Star Trek utopian is iffy to begin with).

I don't know of any. Do you think that a really entertaining Utopian film would be significantly more difficult to conceive of and create than a non-Utopian film, considering that fiction tends to be centred on conflict?

What about books like The Dispossessed or The Fifth Sacred Thing, both of which could be made into a movie? Conflict can be based on the utopian society resisting an exterior threat, be it military or ideological. Conflict can also be based on individuals within the society itself. One can also describe the conflicts that gave rise to the society in the first place.

I actually have found some movies about real-life attempts at utopia or activist organizations or groups that wish to help society, but no story about a fictional utopia, like the books I mentioned.

Not a relevant topic, but I've also been thinking a lot about non-narrative storytelling in movies. I haven't found anything on the subject and I haven't seen many movies that delve too much into that.

Yes, well.

Here is what looks like another good list:

Although it still has some dystopias, like Animal Farm and Brave New World.
